When would you use an emergency area on a motorway?
On some motorways, emergency areas are built at the side of the carriageway. If you break down, try to get your vehicle into the emergency area where there's an emergency telephone. The phone connects directly to a control centre. Before rejoining the motorway, you must call the control centre - a lane may need to be closed to allow you to rejoin safely.
