What does the term ‘lifesaver’ mean?

There are areas behind and to either side of you that are not visible in your mirrors. These are known as blind spots. Just before turning or changing direction, you should look around to check that there’s nothing hazardous in the blind spot. This check is known as a ‘lifesaver’.
